A carefully chosen gown, an immaculate cravat or a fashionable bonnet could communicate a person’s wealth, position, taste and aspirations before a single word had been spoken.

For In Perfect Confidence, we invite you to step into the fashions of 1818, a time of high waistlines, elegant silhouettes, beautifully tailored coats and an abundance of delightful accessories. Our aim is to create a convincing and atmospheric Regency setting, but we do not expect every participant to be an expert in historical costume or to spend a fortune on their wardrobe.

Creating a beautiful Regency costume on a budget is absolutely possible — and very much encouraged. Whether you sew your own clothes, borrow garments, adapt second-hand finds or commission a complete outfit, there are many ways to achieve a wonderful result. A simple costume with the right silhouette and a few carefully chosen details can be just as effective as an elaborate, historically accurate ensemble.

Above all, we value the overall impression and atmosphere rather than historical perfection. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable, regardless of their experience, sewing skills or budget.

The most important thing is to create a costume that suits your character, helps you feel part of the world and remains comfortable throughout the event.

A Few Things to Know Before You Begin

Dress for your character

Fashion was not merely a matter of personal preference. Age, income, occupation, marital status and social ambition all influenced how people dressed. A young heiress might own several fashionable gowns, while the daughter of a clergyman might wear simpler garments, carefully maintained and altered to follow the latest styles. An established gentleman of the landed gentry might favour excellent tailoring and restrained colours, while a prosperous industrialist could use expensive fabrics and fashionable details to demonstrate his success. Not everyone would have worn the very latest fashions. Older garments might be altered, handed down or worn for many years.

You will need clothes for several days

Unlike a single-evening Regency ball, In Perfect Confidence takes place over several days, with meals, conversations, social visits and other activities. We therefore recommend planning at least one comfortable daytime outfit and something more formal for evening occasions. Additional outfits are welcome but not essential. Changing accessories, hairstyles, waistcoats or outer garments can make the same basic costume suitable for several different situations.

— ❦ —

Ladies’ Clothing

The Regency silhouette

The defining feature of women’s fashion during the Regency period was the raised waistline, positioned immediately beneath the bust. By 1818, skirts were generally becoming wider and more structured, with decorative bands, embroidery, ruffles and other trimmings particularly fashionable near the hem.

A convincing Regency gown will usually have:

A high waistline beneath the bust.

A fitted bodice.

A long skirt reaching approximately to the ankles or floor.

A neckline and sleeves appropriate to the occasion.

Fabrics and decoration that reflect the character’s circumstances. It protected the gown and other garments from perspiration and made them more comfortable to wear.
Stays: Regency stays supported the bust and helped create the fashionable silhouette. Both short and long styles existed. Modern participants may choose historical stays, a suitable modern alternative or no structured undergarment at all, depending on the cut of their gown.
Petticoat: A lightweight underskirt could provide coverage, improve the drape of a gown and help prevent thin fabrics from becoming transparent.
Stockings: Cotton or silk stockings were worn with shoes or slippers.

You do not need perfectly reconstructed historical underwear. These layers are helpful for achieving the correct silhouette, but your comfort comes first.

Day dresses

Daytime gowns were generally more practical and modest than evening gowns. Long sleeves, higher necklines and durable fabrics were appropriate for everyday activities. Cotton prints, stripes and plain-coloured fabrics can all work beautifully.A spencer, a short fitted jacket ending at the high waist, is a particularly useful addition. A pelisse, a longer coat-like outer garment, is another characteristic Regency option. A shawl can provide warmth and add colour to an otherwise simple outfit.

Evening gowns

Evening dress offered an opportunity for finer fabrics, more elaborate decoration and fashionable accessories. Short sleeves and lower necklines were common, although fashions varied with age, taste and occasion. Silk, fine cotton and muslin are all suitable choices. White and pale colours were fashionable, particularly for younger women, but Regency wardrobes were far from colourless. Blues, greens, yellows, pinks, reds and patterned fabrics all have a place in our setting. Ribbons, lace, embroidery, decorative hems and carefully chosen jewellery can transform a relatively simple gown into an elegant evening ensemble.

For our LARP: You do not need a separate ballgown unless you wish to have one. A simple Regency-style dress with appropriate evening accessories will be perfectly suitable for our more formal gatherings.

Hairstyles and makeup

In 1818, women’s hairstyles frequently combined an arrangement of hair at the back of the head with curls framing the face. Buns, plaits and carefully arranged ringlets are all useful options. Hair ornaments might include ribbons, combs, flowers, pearls or feathers. You can create ringlets using a curling iron or by winding slightly damp hair around soft fabric strips and allowing it to dry overnight. For a simple Regency hairstyle, gather the hair into a bun or plait at the back, leaving a few strands free around the face. Curl these into ringlets and add a ribbon, comb or small decorative ornament. Short hair is no obstacle. A few carefully styled curls, a decorative headband or a suitable hairpiece can help establish the period appearance.

A little practice goes a long way! We warmly recommend trying out your Regency hairstyle at home before the event. Experiment with curls, pins, ribbons and simple updos to find a style that suits your hair and your character. Practising beforehand will make getting ready at Noblethorpe Hall much easier, especially when time is limited before dinner or an evening gathering. Even a simple hairstyle can look wonderfully appropriate with a few carefully chosen details.

Need a little guidance? We have also put together some practical hairstyle tutorials to help you create your Regency look. You can find them on our website: Regency Hairstyle Tutorials. We recommend trying out your chosen hairstyle at least once before arriving at Noblethorpe Hall.

Makeup was generally intended to enhance the complexion rather than create an obviously painted appearance. A natural-looking style is therefore a good choice for our setting. You may also choose to wear no makeup at all.

Bonnets and head coverings

Bonnets were an important part of outdoor dress and are among the most recognisable accessories of the period. A straw or fabric bonnet trimmed with ribbons, flowers or feathers can make even a simple gown look distinctly Regency. Married women and older ladies might also wear caps indoors, while turbans and other decorative head coverings could be fashionable for evening wear. Headwear is encouraged, particularly for outdoor scenes, but is not necessary.

Gloves

Gloves were an important accessory for respectable society, especially during formal occasions and dancing. Short gloves can be suitable for daytime wear, while longer gloves may complement an evening gown. White or cream-coloured cotton gloves are an accessible and practical choice.

Reticules

A reticule is a small drawstring bag carried by hand. It is both a charming period accessory and a practical place to keep small belongings. You might carry a handkerchief, a fan, your character booklet or other objects belonging to your character. A simple reticule is also an excellent beginner’s sewing project.

Jewellery and personal accessories

Jewellery might include necklaces, earrings, brooches, rings and decorative hair ornaments. Pearls, cameos and small pendants are particularly useful for creating a Regency appearance. A fan, embroidered handkerchief, miniature portrait or sentimental keepsake can also become a wonderful character prop. Think about what your accessories say about your character. Is that brooch a family heirloom? Was the necklace a gift from an admirer? Does your character possess something she would rather not explain?

Shoes

Soft leather shoes and flat slippers are particularly suitable for the period. Modern ballet flats or other discreet, comfortable shoes can be excellent substitutes, especially if their appearance is reasonably simple. Remember that you may spend a considerable amount of time standing, walking and socialising. Comfortable footwear is far more important than perfect historical accuracy.

— ❦ —

Gentlemen’s Clothing

The Regency silhouette

Gentlemen’s fashion in 1818 was characterised by elegance, careful tailoring and an increasingly understated appearance. Gone were many of the extravagant decorations associated with eighteenth-century court dress. Instead, fashionable gentlemen favoured well-cut coats, fitted waistcoats, high-waisted trousers or breeches, and carefully arranged neckcloths. The ideal silhouette emphasised broad shoulders and a defined waist. A gentleman’s appearance was expected to look effortless, although achieving that effect could require considerable attention to detail.

The essential elements of a Regency gentleman’s outfit are:

A white or off-white shirt.

A cravat or neckcloth.

A waistcoat.

High-waisted trousers, pantaloons or breeches.

A fitted coat with tails.

Suitable shoes or boots.

These garments form the foundation of almost any respectable gentleman’s wardrobe, from a country clergyman to a wealthy landowner.

Underneath the clothes

As with women’s clothing, men’s garments were worn over several practical layers.

Shirt: The shirt was an undergarment as well as a visible part of the outfit. It was generally made from linen or cotton, often with a generous cut, long sleeves and a high collar.
Drawers (underpants) were worn by men during the Regency period, although styles and individual habits varied. They could be made from linen, cotton or knitted fabric. A long linen shirt was also an essential part of a gentleman’s underclothing.
Stockings: Long stockings were worn with knee breeches, while shorter stockings could be worn with trousers and boots.
Braces: High-waisted trousers were commonly supported by braces rather than a modern belt. They were generally attached to buttons on the waistband rather than modern metal clips, and worn discreetly beneath the waistcoat.

You do not need historically accurate underwear, but a shirt with the correct collar and a pair of high-waisted trousers can make an enormous difference to the appearance of your costume.

Shirts and collars

A Regency shirt was usually white, with a loose body, long sleeves and a collar designed to stand up around the neck. The collar was particularly important because it framed the cravat and helped create the fashionable appearance of a high, elegantly dressed neck. A simple white linen or cotton shirt is an excellent starting point. Modern shirts can sometimes be adapted, particularly if they have a generous cut and a suitable collar. Avoid visibly modern details such as prominent breast pockets, contrasting buttons or contemporary fitted styling. For a more historically convincing appearance, choose a shirt with a high collar and gathered or loose sleeves.

Cravats and neckcloths

Few items are more characteristic of Regency gentlemen than the cravat. A cravat was usually a long piece of white linen or cotton, wrapped around the neck and tied or folded into a fashionable arrangement. The exact style varied considerably. Some gentlemen preferred a simple knot, while others devoted considerable attention to elaborate folds and carefully arranged collars. The famous Regency dandy Beau Brummell helped popularise the idea that a gentleman’s elegance depended upon immaculate linen, excellent tailoring and restrained good taste.

For our LARP, a simple white neckcloth is entirely sufficient. You can make one from a strip of lightweight cotton or linen. It should be long enough to wrap comfortably around the neck and tie at the front. Practise tying it before the event. Even a relatively simple arrangement can take a little experimentation. A neatly tied cravat is one of the easiest and most effective ways to transform an otherwise ordinary outfit into Regency clothing.

Waistcoats

The waistcoat was an essential element of a gentleman’s wardrobe and one of the few garments that offered considerable opportunities for colour and decoration. Waistcoats could be made from cotton, linen, wool or silk, depending on the occasion and the wearer’s circumstances. For daytime wear, plain or subtly patterned waistcoats were practical choices. More elaborate fabrics, embroidery and fashionable patterns might be worn for social occasions.

Waistcoats were generally cut relatively short, ending around the natural waist, and were designed to be worn with high-waisted trousers or breeches. They might have standing or turned-down collars, lapels, and one or two rows of buttons.

A waistcoat is an excellent way to express your character’s personality. A serious clergyman might prefer dark or restrained colours, while a wealthy young gentleman could choose a more fashionable pattern. A prosperous industrialist might favour an expensive silk waistcoat as a discreet indication of his success. If you are creating a costume on a budget, a suitable waistcoat can be one of the most useful investments.

Coats and tailcoats

The most characteristic gentleman’s coat of the Regency period was the tailcoat, with a fitted body, a cutaway front and long tails at the back. These coats were designed to emphasise the chest and shoulders while fitting closely around the waist. High collars and prominent lapels were fashionable, and the coat was usually worn over a waistcoat. Common colours included dark blue, black, brown and green, although a wider range of colours was also available. Wool was particularly suitable for coats because it could be tailored into a structured silhouette.

A well-fitting modern tailcoat may sometimes be adapted, but Regency coats differ in their proportions and details. Look for a relatively high waist, a fitted shape and a collar appropriate to the period.A gentleman would not necessarily remove his coat indoors simply because he was comfortable. In respectable company, the coat formed an important part of being properly dressed.

Trousers, pantaloons and breeches

Men’s legwear was changing rapidly during the Regency period.

Breeches: Knee-length breeches had been fashionable throughout much of the eighteenth century and continued to be worn in the Regency period, particularly for certain formal occasions. They were usually worn with long stockings and shoes.
Pantaloons: These were close-fitting garments extending below the knee or to the ankle. They created a smooth, fitted silhouette and were popular among fashionable gentlemen.
Trousers: Long trousers were becoming increasingly common by 1818. They were generally worn with a high waist and could be relatively close-fitting or somewhat looser, depending on the style.

For our LARP, high-waisted trousers are an excellent choice. Modern trousers may work if the waist is sufficiently high and the cut is not obviously contemporary. Avoid low waistbands, visible modern belts, denim and conspicuous modern pockets. A pair of suitable trousers, combined with a waistcoat and coat, will create a convincing Regency silhouette without requiring a complete historically reconstructed outfit.

Daywear and evening dress

Gentlemen were expected to dress appropriately for the occasion. During the day, a gentleman might wear a coloured coat, practical trousers or breeches, a waistcoat and boots or shoes. A country gentleman might favour sturdy fabrics and riding boots, particularly if he spent time outdoors. For evening gatherings, dress was generally more formal. Darker coats, fine waistcoats, immaculate white linen and carefully polished shoes were appropriate choices. Knee breeches and stockings remained suitable for certain formal occasions, although fashionable evening dress was not identical in every social circle.

For In Perfect Confidence, you do not need an entirely separate evening wardrobe. Changing from boots to shoes, selecting a finer waistcoat or arranging a fresh cravat can make an outfit appear more formal.

Greatcoats, cloaks and outdoor clothing

Outdoor clothing was an important part of a gentleman’s wardrobe. A greatcoat was a substantial overcoat, often made from wool, designed to protect the wearer from cold and wet weather. Some greatcoats had one or more short capes around the shoulders, a particularly recognisable feature of early nineteenth-century outerwear. A riding coat or practical country coat could also be suitable for gentlemen who spent time outdoors. Although our LARP takes place in July, English weather can be unpredictable. A suitable coat or cloak may be useful during cooler evenings.

Hats

A gentleman would normally wear a hat outdoors. The top hat was becoming increasingly fashionable during the Regency period, and a suitable early nineteenth-century style can be a very effective accessory.A bicorne or other older-fashioned hat might also suit particular characters or circumstances, but the top hat is generally the most useful choice for our setting. Remember that hats were normally removed indoors, particularly in polite company. If you have limited resources, a hat is a welcome addition rather than an absolute requirement.

Shoes and boots

Footwear varied according to the occasion.

Shoes: Low leather shoes, often worn with stockings and breeches, were suitable for formal occasions.
Ankle boots: These could be worn with trousers or pantaloons and were practical for everyday use.
Riding boots: Taller leather boots were associated with riding and outdoor activities. They could be fashionable, but were less appropriate for formal indoor evening gatherings.

Modern leather shoes or simple ankle boots can work very well for a Regency costume. Choose footwear that is comfortable and safe to walk in. You may be spending many hours standing, walking or moving between rooms.

Hairstyles and grooming

Gentlemen’s hairstyles during the Regency period were generally shorter and more natural-looking than the powdered wigs and elaborate arrangements of the previous century. Fashionable hair was often brushed forward or arranged in soft curls around the forehead and temples. The classical styles of ancient Greece and Rome influenced men’s hairstyles, and some fashionable gentlemen deliberately cultivated a slightly tousled appearance. Others preferred neatly brushed hair with a side parting or a more restrained arrangement. For a simple Regency hairstyle, try brushing the hair forward and creating a little volume or curl at the front. If you have longer hair, it may be possible to tie it back discreetly or style it to suit an older-fashioned gentleman.

Facial hair: Clean-shaven faces were particularly fashionable among gentlemen, although sideburns were common. Full beards were less typical of fashionable Regency society.

We do not expect anyone to cut their hair or shave for the event. A little thoughtful styling is quite sufficient.

Jewellery and cravat pins

Although gentlemen’s fashion during the Regency period was generally more restrained than in earlier decades, jewellery and decorative accessories still played an important role. Cravat pins, also known as stock pins, were both fashionable and practical. These decorative pins helped secure a gentleman’s neckcloth and could be made from gold, silver or other metals, sometimes adorned with pearls, gemstones or miniature designs. A carefully chosen cravat pin is an excellent way to add a touch of elegance and individuality to your costume. It might be a discreet gold pin worn by a respectable country gentleman, a pearl pin favoured by a fashionable young man, or an elaborate piece intended to impress.

Gentlemen might also wear rings, watch chains, seals and fobs, depending on their wealth and personal taste. A signet ring could display a family crest, while a watch fob or engraved seal might be both useful and decorative. As with ladies’ jewellery, these accessories can also tell a story. Perhaps a ring has been inherited from a beloved relative, a cravat pin was a gift from a secret admirer, or an expensive watch conceals a gentleman’s increasingly precarious financial circumstances.

A few carefully chosen details can reveal a great deal about a character — sometimes rather more than he might wish.

Gloves, walking sticks and other accessories

Accessories could communicate both social standing and personal taste.

Gloves: Leather or fabric gloves were useful for outdoor wear and certain formal occasions.
Walking sticks: A walking stick could be both practical and fashionable, particularly for an older gentleman or someone wishing to project an air of distinction.
Pocket watches: A pocket watch, often attached to a chain or ribbon, was a valuable and fashionable accessory. It might also serve as a treasured family possession.
Handkerchiefs: A clean linen handkerchief was a practical necessity and an important part of a well-dressed gentleman’s personal belongings.
Spectacles: Period-inspired spectacles can be a charming addition, although modern glasses are entirely welcome.
Writing accessories: A small notebook, letter case or folded correspondence can be useful props for a gentleman involved in business, estate management or private intrigues.

Choose accessories that suit your character rather than attempting to carry everything at once. A gentleman of modest means might possess only a few carefully maintained items, while a wealthy heir might enjoy fashionable luxuries.

A note on social standing and personal style

A gentleman’s clothing was an important indicator of his position in society, but wealth did not always guarantee elegance. A prosperous businessman might wear expensive garments in an effort to establish his respectability, while a gentleman from an old landed family might consider conspicuous display rather vulgar. A young man newly returned from Cambridge might be eager to follow the latest London fashions. His father, meanwhile, might regard such extravagance with considerable suspicion. A clergyman would generally favour a more restrained appearance, while an eccentric scholar or artist might be rather less concerned with fashionable expectations. For our characters, these distinctions can be particularly enjoyable. Consider whether your gentleman dresses to impress, to conform, to conceal his circumstances or simply because he has never given fashion a moment’s thought.

— ❦ —

Creating a Costume on a Budget

You do not need an expensive bespoke wardrobe to take part in the LARP In Perfect Confidence. A few well-chosen garments and accessories can be more effective than a complicated costume that is uncomfortable or difficult to wear. Consider adapting second-hand clothing, borrowing from friends, sewing a simple Regency gown or combining modern garments with period-inspired accessories. For ladies, the high waistline and overall shape of the gown will usually make the greatest difference. For gentlemen, a shirt, cravat, waistcoat and suitable coat create a strong foundation. If you have limited time or resources, concentrate on the elements that are most visible.

Historical atmosphere matters more to us than historical perfection.

Practical Considerations for Noblethorpe Hall

Our event takes place in July, but English summer weather can be unpredictable. Evenings may be cool, and rain is always a possibility. We recommend bringing a warm shawl, jacket or coat, as well as suitable footwear for walking outdoors. Please also consider the practicalities of spending several days in costume. Choose clothing that allows you to sit comfortably, eat meals, move around the house and participate in scenes without constant adjustment.

Modern necessities such as glasses, hearing aids, mobility aids and medical equipment are, of course, welcome and should never prevent anyone from taking part.

Perfume and scented toiletries may be used sparingly, but please be considerate of other participants who may be sensitive to strong fragrances.

We encourage everyone to contribute to the historical atmosphere while remaining considerate of their own comfort, health and accessibility needs.

A Final Word on Fashion and Character

Clothing can be one of the most enjoyable ways to bring your character to life. Perhaps your character is determined to appear wealthier than they are. Perhaps they cling to an old-fashioned style out of principle. Perhaps a new gown represents the hope of a favourable marriage, or a treasured piece of jewellery carries memories that cannot be spoken aloud.T

he Regency world was full of social expectations, but also of personal choices, hidden ambitions and quiet acts of rebellion.
